I ♥ Labor Day

I hope you are all having a GREAT holiday weekend! Most of you probably appreciate Labor Day because it gives you a 3 day weekend. While that is a significant benefit of the holiday, I ♥Labor Day for 2 other reasons.

First, it's my Birthday! So of course I have a special love for this holiday :)

Second, every Labor Day weekend, the neighborhood where my husband and I used to live has a neighborhood-wide garage sale. The neighborhood is a historic district with large, palatial homes and quaint bungelows. The tree-lined streets are packed with people and every street you turn on has multiple houses participating in the sale. I go every year and I've never walked away empty handed!

Here's what I ended up with this year...

I got the frame for $.50! I'm sure they had it marked so low because there was no glass in it, but we all know there are lots of ways to decorate with glass-less frames! I can't wait to get my spray paint out!

I got the enamel "drawer" for $1. I'm not sure what it's original purpose was, but it seems like maybe it used to be in an old stove or something. If you have any ideas about what it used to be, I'd love to hear them!

The books I got for FREE! I love old books and I was so happy to find these 2 jewels. I really had to dig for them, but I also scored an atlas for my son (he's really in to maps right now) and an old kid's encyclopedia from the 60's. It has some really fun pictures in it that I hope to do something with.

I got this cool, wooden spool for FREE! I must've had some amazing, garage sale mojo going on because I don't usually get so lucky! Or maybe they could all tell that it was my birthday weekend ;) I loved the texture of the spool and I thought it would be nice to use as a display pedestal.

And since I'd had so much good luck and scored so many FREE things, I decided to splurge and I paid $9 for the glove mold. I know, $9 is outrageous for a garage sale, but it was totally worth it!

How can you not love it? It's pink! And the pearl detail around the bottom is so sweet.

And look at the details of the fingernails. Totally worth the $9!

All in all, a successful garage sale trip! (I also scored a toy golf club set for $.50 and some kids clothes, but I didn't think you'd care to see those :)

I'm looking forward to some fun, family time tomorrow for my actual birthday. My husband is going to grill and my son wants to go dig for dinosaur bones (at the Science Museum, not in our backyard). I'm not sure what else the day will bring, but as long as I'm with my family, it will be great!

How are you all spending your holiday weekend?

  1. Happy Birthday Girlie! You share my bro's bday. I also went to Ryan's place for the garage sales. I walked away with a new wardrobe and plenty of those free dusty books from that estate sale. I even plurged on some nachos.

  9. Happy Birthday! Great garage sale finds! Just today I threw out two similar type spools that my husband thought I could use for something. They were from some speaker wires he had purchased. I saw yours and read your idea on maybe how to use it. That's right... I just got back from the trash can out back and scooped them out of the recycle bin. Thanks for the idea!!This is why I love blogging!! Hugs!

  11. Oh well happy birthday!! That is a great reason to celebrate Labor Day! And that huge yard sale?? Oh my gosh, I would be in HEAVEN! Where do you live again?? Because, uh, you might be seeing me in your old neighborhood next year. :)

Great finds too! Could the old drawer be from a vintage refrigerator? Just another thought. My dad has an old refrigerator from his grandparents and everything is enamel like that. No plastic drawers like today. :)

  12. I know I am a little late with this one, I have been out of touch with the blogging world for the past week. Happy Birthday! What a fun birthday you had! I spent the day watching Anthony Bourdain episodes I had on the dvr and knitted socks. It was a good day. :-)
