White Walls…Boring or Chic?

As you know, I am slooooowly working on redoing my living room. One of my biggest issues with this room from a design perspective is that the room is fairly dark. There are 2 skylights, without which the room would feel like a cave. But other than when the sun is directly over head, the room is dark. I hate the color on the walls currently and I’ve been trying to figure out what color to paint them. Obviously, I want it to be a light color to brighten up the space. So I was thinking about white. But is that totally boring??? Or is it super chic??? I’ve never painted a room white before. I’ve always painted rooms with some color because I hated the white walls.

Here’s what the room looks like now (you can seen I’ve already been testing out some colors). Notice I’m finally building my globe collection!

The other dilemma is this monstrous fireplace. It’s dark and stone and takes up this entire wall. (And yes, I realize that painting is up waaaay too high; I just threw it up on the existing nails to get an idea of what I want on that wall). Whatever color I choose has to go with this big stone wall. I’m not planning to paint it, but it could use a good scrubbing!

You’ve seen the other side of the room from my side table, bookshelf and wreath projects.

Here are some inspirational pictures from across blogland that make me think white walls are definitely the way to go!

So what do you think? I love the way you can use pops of color against white walls. I think my turquoise table, orange bookshelf and globes would be beautiful against a white background. Do you have white walls in your home? Is that by design or did you just inherit them when you moved in?

  1. I think white walls are clean and classic. I personally painted my walls a light beige/cream, so I could have some contrast with my bright white trim. Are you SURE you don't want to paint that stone fire place?? It would look extra awesome painted white. It has really pretty texture. And I LOVE your globes, I too am a collector :) Can't wait to see what you do :)

  2. We have white walls. We are renting our home in Germany so we can't change them but I've grown to like the clean/fresh look. It's also easier to bring in a "pop" of color and not worry if it matches your wall color. Oooh ... I think the brick fireplace would look really sharp painted white. Can't wait to see what you decide!

  3. The white walls with your globe collection and the table will add the color contrast I think you crave. Consider even adding a second color like a red into the mix..or maybe even a yellow. I see that color in your globes and in your painting. Those two colors with the white would look divine. DO IT!!!

    Cheers~

  4. I have been loving white walls lately, although I don't have too many in my house. I love the look of the Ballard Design's catalog - white walls with contrasting dark wood.

Ooooh... just had an idea. I love your table. What about getting several more wood pieces and painting them the same color?

  5. I'm a white wall fan, too. Just did my kitchen. You can check it out on my blog to see a room outside of the primping of blogland. The stone wall is gorgeous. It would be a nice contrast.

  6. white would definitely work for your space. would help w/ the light reflection, and give it a breezy feel, warmed up by the lovely rock fireplace. go for it! and if you're not happy with it.. it's the easiest color to paint over!! :D

  7. I love white walls, and I'm a particular fan of a complete white on white room (like my living room is on it's way to being). I agree with some of the others, I think the stone would look great painted white. If you are going to leave it as-is, I think I'd go towards white with a hint of something else in it, like a hint of gray or taupe (whatever colour the stone is) and not pure Titanium white. Like one of the historical whites from Benjamin Moore? Do they still have those?

  8. i think you could get a way with white walls and crisp white trim if you tie in the stone wall (leave stone alone don't paint it-more natural). Focus on finding or creating a white shabby chic mantle for the fireplace (similiar to the first photo idea). I have seen some at antique malls for $75-$150 or you can make one with a kit I saw once on HDTV. It will break up the stone and coordinate with the white walls.

  10. I like color, but I love white walls too. I think white is coming back. With that fireplace, I'd paint the room white. It'll look cool and mid-century.

  11. You can't go wrong with white. I love color but white will make for a great palate to add bright and vibrant colors too. Go for it!!
