I found a sweet little side table at Goodwill for about$5 last summer and like many of my projects, it has sat around untouched...until now. We've had gorgeous weather this week so I decided to get outside and get to work on this little beauty! And just look at it now...
Here's what it looked like before...
Complete with schoolboy graffiti! "Chaz Wuz Here"...not for long, Chaz!
First I sanded off some of the sheen...and "Chaz"!
Then I simply primed it using some spray primer (love that stuff!).
Next I painted it a robin's egg blue color. The color is actually called "Reflecting Pool" by Sherwin Williams, but I think "robin's egg blue" better captures its essence ;) I love how it looked with just the paint, but I really wanted to age and distress it (and I'm so happy I did because it looks even better than it did with just the paint. But more on that later).
So I sanded it using a palm sander and my 2 hands (ie, the old fashioned way).
Then I wiped on some stain with a foam brush and simply wiped it off with a rag. I never knew this was considered "glazing" until I entered the blogging world. I just thought of it as "aging" a piece. How naive I was!
I just could not love this little table any more! I seriously want to paint everything in my house
this color!
Don't you all just love the color? I hope this trend doesn't go out of style any time soon! What's your favorite color to paint furniture?
I'll be partying here this week:

I LOVE that color! I'm actually doing my kitche in the color, paired with a chocolate brown. You did awesome!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THIS! GREAT JOB ON IT! Why do you love the spray primer? Is it just spray Kilz? I have never tried it, but I love this! haha... and I am sure Chaz is so sad that you took him off. LOL Thanx for sharing! :)
ReplyDelete@Alayna - I like the spray primer because it's super quick and it dries really fast. I used the brush on primer for years and never knew what I was missing. Plus I think the spray primer gives a smother finish. I just use the Valspar primer. Nothing too fancy!
ReplyDeleteFabulous makeover! I was cracking up about the "glazing" comment---I have been using stain on my projects too and didn't realize until recently that I was glazing. :) I was cool and didn't even know it! Turquoise has been my go-to color lately. I have a lot of black in my house and turquoise seems to really pop. I will be back to your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute side table & I love the color choice! I'm a new follower, just linked over from Someday Crafts Party. So happy I found your great blog :)

I love this colour as well. Unfortunately I can't resist the urge to paint everything I find white. I know, it's boring :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting! I am really leaning toward the blue! I love your table you did! I would like to distress mine too so I will come back here when I am ready and follow your steps! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little table! Love the color!
ReplyDeleteTo funny about 'Chaz'. One of the downfalls of Goodwill furniture is 'Goodwill Art' [i.e previous owners musings]. The dresser that I refinished for my son last summer had all kinds of hello kitty stickers on it lol!
Have a great day!
REALLY pretty! I love that color a lot!!! Perfect for any season. Great job :)

ReplyDeleteWonderful color! I'm visiting from "weekend bloggy reading". What paint did you use, if you don't mind me asking?
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your sweet comments! Several of you have asked what color I used so I figured I'd better share it with everyone :) It's called "Reflecting Pool" by Sherwin Williams. Happy Painting!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful piece, Rebecca. :) I feel bad for Chaz, though...his artwork being destroyed and all. ;) You did a great job with the glazing!
