Ok friends...I need your help. I have this GIGANTIC painting that used to hang in our old house and I used to love it. However, since we moved to our new house (3 years ago!) I haven't hung it anywhere because it just doesn't seem to fit (literally and figuratively) anywhere.
Anyway, I really want to hang it in my living room/dining room (stay tuned for the makeover this summer!) because I have a big empty wall and I do still like the colors of the painting.
I've decided that what I'm not loving about it is the frame. It seems outdated. Because it's so big, I can't afford to have it reframed and it's painted on board so I can't hang it without a frame.
So I was actually thinking about painting it. What do you all think? I know some of you are mad-creative so I thought I'd throw it out there to blogland and see what you all come up with. Do you think I should paint the frame? If so, what color? Any other suggestions besides painting it or spending a small fortune on a new frame? I need help!

New follower here from TTA! I must first say that I love your blog!
ReplyDeleteI think the frame would look great in yellow or red, just for something different. You could even touch up the detail with black? I'd probably spray paint it:)
i think the frame would look awesome in black- it would really make the vibrant colors of the painting pop!
ReplyDelete@Cassie - would you do black or a dark brown? I actually thought about going dark but I was afraid black would be too modern...but I totally trust your opinion, so I want to hear it!
ReplyDeleteYou could also do gold or silver leaf if you want a traditional look. But I wouldn't reframe it-there are so many paint options to change it up!

If those ornate corner pieces come off I would take them off. I think what looks so out dated is just the color, good luck can't wait to see what you do!

Have a great day!
Hi there! I added your link to the list. So sorry that the inlinkz thing gave you trouble. :(
ReplyDeleteI love the painting, and I think the frame has nice "bones." I like the idea of painting it...maybe black?
Thanks so much for joining the party. :) I hope you have fun "mingling." :)
Visiting from Serenity Now...
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely paint it! I think once the frame is all one color, it will definitely look less outdated. Maybe black or dark brown, but distressed?
Love, love, love the painting, by the way!
I truly love the frame, and think it fits the time period and color palette of the painting. Maybe you are just tired of these piece for now. You could wait until your makeover, and put it up then? Stopping by from Decorating Dilemma Party.

I'd definitely paint it! I agree with black or dark brown, and adding some distressing or rub on for accent?
ReplyDeleteI say paint it black! The frame is gorgeous but I think it blends with the painting too much. I think if you would sand down the decorative edges to show some of the white it will be gorgeous! Can't wait to see what you do!

Before I read any of the other comments, I thought to myself, "paint it black," and I see that that's what a lot of other think, too. This frame is really pretty and I love the details on the corner. I'd use a little rub 'n buff in whatever color you prefer, I personally like coppers and golds.
ReplyDeletePaint definitely seems to be the solution. What other painted surfaces do you have in the room? White? Black? I'd go with whatever you already have, and distress it a little - a light sanding to the edges and details after painting - to give it a more current look and blend in with your personal room style.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
I agree with the others - paint it! :) Black would look really classy, I think.
ReplyDeleteI mean, paint the frame... :)
ReplyDeleteI have to agree that painting it black would look fabulous! I love the size of the painting and all of the colors... it's beautiful! If those accents come off of the frame on the corners that would be even better... they're a bit too flashy for the look you may be going for. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI love the painting, but agree that the frame is outdated. It's the style of frame that I don't like though, so repainting it wouldn't work for me. I would actually try using molding trim to make a frame, paint it and you can glue and nail the painting to it seeing as it's on wood! Here's a good example and tutorial: http://www.bluecricketdesign.net/2010/05/framed-mirror.html
ReplyDeleteI think the frame would look great painted in a really glossy black. I think the black would make the painting look even better too!
ReplyDeleteI'm going with the unpopular choice... metallic. I'd paint the frame a lighter metallic. I'm not typically a fan of metallics, but I have some big pieces framed in gold and I love them... it just gives them a grand feeling.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't you hate how much it costs to frame art?! I have a few larger pieces currently residing in clip frames until the budget allows. Ah well!
Hey! I'm visiting from Amanda's party.
ReplyDeleteI actually think the frame's shape and ornate is very "in" right now, but it would look better in a solid color. I think black spray paint would do the trick. Silver might look okay too.
I think painting it is a great idea! Maybe black -- that color might update it and make the frame a less busy so more attention is on the painting. I can't wait to see what you do!
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Jen
I would paint the frame BLACK!
ReplyDeleteI say black!!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the "black" camp, with additional distressing, of course :).
ReplyDeletetake the ornate corners off, paint it black and then distress it
